As mentioned on -private, I joined OSI last week. This week I received
this email. This is the type of stuff that I think that SPI is greatly
missing out on; building relationships with its members and the external
community.

important work to educate the world about, and increase adoption of,
open source software.

Please find attached your OSI Individual Membership Card, suitable for
printing. The OSI participates in a variety of events, and is working
with our sponsors and affiliates, to provide various benefits for our
members, such as discounts on conference registrations, books, hardware,
etc. Your OSI card includes your OSI member number which may be needed
to receive some of these benefits. Some current examples include:

Free three months subscription to LinuxVoice Magazine with access to
back-issues (electronic version).
50% off Joomla World Conference.
20% off O'Reily's OSCON registration fees.
10% off Linux Foundation conferences, e.g. LinuxCon and CloudOpen

action items get done.

So, where's the SPI issues list on Bitbucket or Github so members can see
the issues and become contributors?
Bitbucket & Github are FREE as in BEER (not perfect but not too shabby) and
immediately do-able.
And they both have a built-in wiki!!!!

Where's the searchable SPI forum using Discourse on a DigitalOcean or
Bitnami VM so members can catch up with current and past discussions and
activities?
DO is $20/month, +$4 for weekly backups. $288 per year total, Mighty cost
effective, and again it's immediately do-able.
If needed we could ask for donations from members.
I'm in for $25 if we go this route, and there are probably eleven more SPI
members who could donate the same.

Think of it this way:
If I had to eat only 100% organic food while working to make the world's
food sources more organic,
this would be possible only in specific urban areas, e.g. not possible in
Dayton, Ohio but entirely doable in NYC.
Sub-optimal choices for tools are okay, it's not an abandonment of the
cause.

which reinforced my decision to join.

Hello,

Per below, I don't actually think we need membership dues because of our
corporate model, we are guaranteed income as long as our associated
projects are getting donations.

I can however see a situation where we do a fundraising drive for
specific things (say to build professional quality tutorials with video
for X free software).
