Not to be too cynical but...
The open source industry companies seem to mirror their closed source
counterparts almost exactly.
Corporate not-for-profits and foundations always gear their efforts for pure
profit results at the other end.
What linux really needs is continued development both in larger servers and
smaller clients (my interest :) and thats all done by linux folks everywhere.

Depends on how you identify the open source industry.
If by open source industry you mean companies whose primary income comes
from developing and maintaining open source products then there's a lot
of truth to what you say. However, if by open source industry you mean
the companies and organizations which write the bulk of open source
software you get a somewhat different picture.
[Aside: the most ironic thing about the term "Open Source" is that,
historically, almost every entity which labeled itself "Open" wasn't.]
