Hi all. Fluxbox has applied to become an SPI Associated project.
Comments and questions are welcome.

Fluxbox is a windowmanager for X that was based on the Blackbox 0.61.1
code.

I support and am sponsoring this application because:

* Fluxbox is a genuine Free Software community project:

Fluxbox is released under the MIT license, which is endorsed by both the
Free Software Foundation and the Open Source Initiative.

* Fluxbox has an established development community and history of software
releases:

Fluxbox has been in active development for 10 years and has an active
core team. Fluxbox was a 'mentoring organisation' in the Google Summer of
Code 2011.

* Fluxbox is used by a broad audience:

Fluxbox is an actively used X11 window manager available within the
packaging systems of many Linux distributions and other operating systems,
such as FreeBSD.

The resolution below is proposed to be submitted to the October 12 board
meeting:

SPI resolution 2011-10-01.rtb.1

WHEREAS

1. Fluxbox is a substantial and significant Free Software project.

2. The Fluxbox developers would like SPI's support and assistance,
including taking donations.

THE SPI BOARD RESOLVES THAT

3. Fluxbox is formally invited to become an SPI Associated Project,
according to the SPI Framework for Associated Projects, SPI Resolution
1998-11-16.iwj.1-amended-2004-08-10.iwj.1, a copy of which can be found
at http://www.spi-inc.org/corporate/resolutions/2004/2004-08-10.iwj.1/

4. Mathias Gumz is recognised by SPI as the authoritative decision maker
and SPI liaison for Fluxbox. Successors will be appointed by the
Fluxbox Project Leader.

5. This invitation will lapse, if not accepted, 60 days after it is
approved by the SPI Board.

In an SPI context it is undefined what a Fluxbox Project Leader is:

If it is the same person as the SPI Liaison, then this should say
"Successors will be appointed by the Fluxbox SPI Liaison."

If there is a separate Fluxbox Project Leader, it would be good to
have some reference to how the SPI Board can know who the Project
Leader is. (For instance, if Fluxbox has an election procedure for the
PL, then the Liaison can be tasked by informing the Board every time a
new leader was chosen, with a link to publicly available election
results.)

(Other than that, I of course support the idea of Fluxbox becoming an
associated project.)

You assume we have elections :)

Fluxbox is a very tight-knight community. We've had the same leader
for the last 10 years, and if we did have a new leader, that role
would be transitioned to them without a vote.

That being said, I think that's sane. I'm sure forwarding a change in
FPL to SPI would be easy (and low volume!)

Feedback super welcome.

Actually, I was assuming it was just one person :-)

In that case, just add a sentence naming him by name: "The Fluxbox
Project Leader is John Doe. The Fluxbox Project Leader is a permanent
title and he will appoint his own successor when needed, and such
appointment will be communicated to the SPI Board by the Fluxbox SPI
Liaison."

Yes, and with the above you can probably get by another 10 years or
more. But it's good to write it in a way that there is nothing open
ended in the text.

The Fluxbox Leader is currently "Henrik Kinnunen
<fluxgen(at)fluxbox(dot)org>", and I know we'd all be fine adding in the
above verbage, including Henrik's name in there (hey, nice name!)

I think we're all on the same page :)
